Commonplace Coffee is hosting Grow Pittsburgh at their Rockwell Park cafe (7514 Thomas Blvd, Pittsburgh, PA 15206) on Wednesday, September 18, from 9-11am. Guests are invited to try free samples of the blend, learn more about Grow Pittsburgh, and purchase full-size drinks at the cafe featuring Cultivar Blend on drip and espresso.
Grow Pittsburgh’s Development Manager Vee Cugini shares, "We are excited to partner with Commonplace Coffee to create a blend that honors the incredible work that farmers do across the globe and in our own community. This partnership will support Grow Pittsburgh's efforts across Allegheny County, which helps connect more than 40,000 residents of all ages with fresh local produce and the education and resources needed to grow their own food."
Cultivar Blend is also barista-developed, meaning a staff member outside of Commonplace Coffee’s roasting team spearheaded its creation. Service Technician Justin Hayhurst contributed his extensive coffee knowledge to this project and chose to partner with Grow Pittsburgh, as a nod to his work in gardening and horticulture.
Justin shares, “It was important to me to highlight the connection between farm-to-cup and how the coffee industry is trying to source sustainable crops in spite of changing and unpredictable climates. As a nod to that, we've included a Robusta coffee in the blend. Though not new to the industry, Robusta has garnered interest from the specialty coffee community for being more adaptable to the changing climate and for its disease resistance.” Justin adds, “Cultivar Blend marks the first time Commonplace Coffee has offered a Robusta. I hope people take a moment to ponder the incredible effort being made to ensure coffee is available for everyone to enjoy for years to come.”
This blend performs well on both espresso and drip coffee. It features a Robusta from Hulikere Estate in India, which is balanced by Muzo Ikizere, a sweet, complex, and acidic Arabica from Rwanda. Together, these coffees create a completely unique profile featuring notes of red plum, chestnut, sencha (green tea).
