COMMONPLACE COFFEE TO OPEN NEW CAFE AND BAKERY LOCATION THIS SUMMER AT FORMER GEORGIE'S CORNER CAFE

PITTSBURGH, PA (May 14, 2026) – Commonplace Coffee is ecstatic to announce plans for a new cafe and bakery in Shadyside, scheduled to open this summer. This new location will inhabit the space formerly held by Georgie’s Corner Cafe at 5743 Walnut Street.

In addition to serving as Commonplace’s ninth retail coffeehouse, this new location will relocate a significant portion of their commercial kitchen and baking operations from Indiana, Pennsylvania into Pittsburgh. The coffeehouse will offer Commonplace’s full beverage menu, alongside scratch-made baked goods, grab-and-go breakfasts, and lunch items created by Commonplace’s Bakery.

Commonplace is profoundly grateful for this unique opportunity to steward the beautiful space and community created by George and Beth Saxon at Georgie’s Corner Cafe over the past four years.

“We’re incredibly excited to step into this next chapter, building on the thoughtful foundation Beth and George created over the past few years,” said TJ Fairchild, founder of Commonplace Coffee. “We’re honored to carry this work forward and to help ensure the Shadyside coffeehouse remains a welcoming place to connect over great coffee and fresh baked goods.”

“Our biggest hope was that we could find a local business to take over the Georgie’s café space who would continue some elements of what we’d been doing,” said George Saxon, co-founder of Georgie's Corner Cafe. “We are so happy that Commonplace Coffee is it! Commonplace is an excellent fit for the Shadyside neighborhood because Georgie’s customers want delicious coffee that is ethically sourced and roasted locally. Georgie’s was known for exceptional pastries, and the Commonplace culinary team will continue this high standard for the community.”

The decision to open this new location was born out of a desire for Commonplace to reduce stress on bakery and delivery operations. Commonplace is excited to embark on this exploration and expanded investment in their bakery’s continued success and growth.

“Having a kitchen location in Pittsburgh is so exciting because it gives our team the opportunity to grow and try new things in a manner that is more specific to our Pittsburgh guests”, said Natalie Prunty, Bakery Manager for Commonplace Coffee. “We've never operated a bakery where our team gets to experience the guest's immediate interactions with our products, and I am so excited to see how that level of feedback and relationship can help us to grow and expand even more."

Commonplace’s Indiana bakery, which first opened in 2015, will continue to operate in a modified capacity.

“While we are sad about saying goodbye to Georgie’s, we feel a lot of pride about what we did accomplish, and the plan for Commonplace Coffee to fill the café space is the best next chapter,” said George. “Georgie’s provided an upbeat community space, which makes life better for so many of us, and Commonplace will continue to provide this. We are so grateful to our customers and employees, whom we genuinely miss seeing. Thank you to TJ and the team at Commonplace! We can’t wait to be customers!”
