At six years, our relationship with Long Miles Coffee is easily one of our longest with a particular group of people and the coffee they produce. Owned by Ben and Kristy Carlson, the washing stations in Kayanza, Burundi continue to provide a hope for stability and a hope for the future of the communities in which they are located. Their second washing station, Heza, is the Kirundi word for “Beautiful Place.” It employs 300 neighbors on a full-time and seasonal basis, offers imaginative and responsive processing for roasters, and offers seedlings to the five surrounding hills from which the coffee comes. Some of these workers are like the coffee scout Alphonse, who metaphorically shepherded the coffee growers of Gishubi Hill across the valley to Heza. Being so close to the Kibira forest makes for excellent cover for coffee, but also makes excellent cover for militants and armed groups, who can snatch up the property and livelihood of people who live there. By sharing best practices and agronomical advice, Alphonse was able to help the people of Gishubi reinvest in their coffee rather than uproot it. We are always more than proud to represent Long Miles Coffee and the people they in turn represent.
