An offering from Tanzania has become a yearly mainstay for us and for good reason! We really enjoy the sparkle a Tanzanian coffee can bring to our lineup, while remaining approachable as an everyday drinker. Mwika North is located in the Northern region of Kilimanjaro, and we are incredibly excited to expand our offerings into another region of Tanzania. Our long time importer, Crop to Cup, offers this story of the coffee’s journey, Coffee was first brought to Tanzania by Germans in 1835 to a region called Kaleme Church. It was at this time that a man named Zebadoya was rewarded for his service to the church with a charter to plant coffee, which he brought back to his home in Mwika. Mwika is a town, referred to by locals, as one of the ‘gateways’ of Kilimanjaro. While he was technically the only one ‘allowed’ to plant in this area, coffee started sprouting up in the gardens of his friends, family and neighbors. In the 1900’s, population increased, providing more labor to help with larger harvests. These workers took cherries back to their homes to plant as well, completing the spread of coffee across Kilimanjaro. We love this historical look at  coffee in Tanzania and hope you do too!
