In 1953, Vicente Garcia de Oliveira planted the first seedlings at Sìtio São Joaquim, beginning a family legacy that carries through to the work of his grandson, Jesimar. Several years ago, Jesimar’s son died in an automobile accident, which prompted him to spend more time in thought among the coffee trees of São Joaquim. Our friends at Collaborative Coffee Source relay his words: “I lost the pleasure of socializing when my son died. And coffee saved me from my inner ghosts and the depression that struck me hardly.” His time with coffee led him to compete in and win the prestigious Cup of Excellence in 2012, which sparked a turn into producing exclusively specialty coffees. He works with Carmo Coffee, an exporting group known for their commitment to quality and the long-term health of the industry in their community and region; their commitment to fair wages means that up to ⅔ of the cost of the coffee comes from labor. We are honored to be a part of the family through-line of that brings this lovingly produced coffee from Vicente to Jesimar, and in turn to you.
