This coffee comes to us from the Sopacdi Cooperative, which was founded in 2002 by Joachim Munganga as a means to bridge ethnic strife and tap into the international specialty coffee market. It currently includes more than 5600 farmers from a variety of ethnic groups in Kivu, located in the Eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Co-op is headquartered in the town of Minova, where they recently finished building their first coffee washing station in over 40 years. It is a significant accomplishment for the region as many of the communities are small and remote, scattered amongst the mountain highlands surrounding Lake Kivu. For a country that has experienced years of conflict, civil war, and great poverty, the formation of the Sopacdi Cooperative has meant new infrastructure and better opportunities for coffee producers. Although there is still much work to be done as many producers lack resources such as electricity and running water, there exists a feeling of hope for members of Sopacdi, who are rebuilding communities and working together for a better future. We are honored to feature coffee from this region and be able to share it with you.
