As a seasonal crop, coffee harvests are often subject to the whims of nature, and as an export good grown in nations looking to safeguard revenue and reputation, processing and exports are often subject to the realities of changing rules and laws in countries of export. What this means for our coffee from Tanzania this year is that we are going to have to wait a bit longer than we thought for the coffee from our friends at Mwalyego AMCOS. While we wait, however, we get the privilege of showcasing a new coffee sourced by the good people at Crop To Cup Importers. The Uru North cooperative has been around since the early 1990s, when three smaller coops that had been around since the 1960s joined forces. The 375 members elect seven board members every three years; most of the members also intercrop bananas and other items, and also have some livestock as well. In the Chagga language, Uru means “freedom.” 150 years ago, the people of Uru moved up their mountain to be free of malarial wetlands; it seems that in working together, they have found a certain economic freedom as well. We are honored to be able to share their story, and their coffee with you!
