Why “The Commonplace”

By February 2, 2010The Coffee Blog

we named the coffeehouse “the commonplace” because of a poem written by Walt Whitman. Julie stumbled upon it one night as we were deciding what to name the shop. Another piece of writing that seems to echo the concept of finding beauty in the commonplace is:

“Earth’s crammed with heaven, And every common bush afire with God, But only he who sees takes off his shoes; The rest sit round and pick blackberries. ” — Elizabeth Barrett Browning

I am reminded of what happens in a coffeehouse when I read this poem. I often see conversations of consequence happening at the commonplace. A simple meeting of friends, a study-group focusing of some valuable event in history, or some other event that started out so innocently ended up changing lives. Next time you come to the commonplace be ready for a shoe-removing experience (but please actually leave your shoes on).
