Commonplace Coffee connected with Kris many months ago through their friend and wholesale partner Derek Davies of Cafe Conmigo. This connection began as a simple opportunity to engage over a shared passion for coffee and the information around sourcing, roasting, and tasting that goes with it. As conversation continued, it became clear that Kris puts the same level of passion he has on ice into other parts of his life, including coffee. Commonplace is honored to work with Kris to create a blend that gives back to coffee producing communities and partners at origin.
Kris shares, “It's pretty special to know this blend can do more than just make a great cup of coffee. If people enjoy it and, at the same time, it helps support coffee growing communities, that's something I'm proud to be part of.”
Kris is a big fan of espresso and his ideal cup of coffee is nutty, chocolatey, and smooth. These descriptors often apply to coffees from across Central America. As such, that is where Commonplace’s initial search for blend components started. When they held a tasting with Kris to learn more about his coffee preferences, they found he was very fond of the Mexican coffees they sampled from Chiapas and Oaxaca. Commonplace experimented with combinations of blends and Kris loved the synergy between the soft, silky and chocolatey Mexican profiles and the clean, bright and fruity profiles of East African coffees. Together, they created a blend profile that is sweet, nutty and had deep, rich flavors of dates and other dried fruits, sweet baking spices, and chocolate.
Proceeds from Tanger Blend benefit Beneficio, a nonprofit founded by members of importer/exporter Osito Coffee. Beneficio was founded on Osito’s desire to make a bigger and longer lasting impact on the lives of people in the communities in which they work. Their primary goal is to address environmental, social, and emergency issues in coffee and cacao producing communities that go above and beyond paying more for their raw material. Beneficio hopes to listen intently to the needs of the communities and address some of these issues head on in collaborative ways.
Kyle Bellinger, CEO of Osito Coffee, shares, “Commonplace is one of our ‘ride or dies,’ having been a meaningful client of ours since day one. It means the absolute world to see Commonplace grow with us over the years and then, to be the first company to commit direct contributions to Beneficio is just exceedingly special and in the true spirit of partnership throughout the supply chain.”
As Tanger Blend changes and evolves over the next year, customers can expect a rotation of blend components across Mexico, Burundi and Ethiopia. Together they will create a sweet and comfortable coffee that will be sure to make it a hockey morning in Pittsburgh.
Additional events and collaborations between Kris Letang and Commonplace Coffee will take place throughout the duration of the blend release. Anyone interested in discovering more about those planned activities should follow Commonplace Coffee on social media and subscribe to their weekly newsletter.
