This is our second year purchasing coffee from Guatemala’s Mujeres Luchando por un Mejor Futuro, also known as “Ella”, via Onyx Coffee. These women use their coffee to tell a powerful story, and we are excited to share it.

Women account for around 70% of the labor force in coffee production globally, but only around 20% of coffee farms are owned by women. Coffee, like societies across the globe, is largely patriarchal. While discrimination is not homogeneous, it can affect women disproportionately in a myriad of ways: lower wages, not receiving the credit that they are due in coffee production, limited market access, limited access to education – the list goes on. There are also frequent disputes over land due to systemic barriers like discriminatory land ownership laws, less access to credit and financing, and a "double burden" of farm work combined with household and childcare responsibilities.

However, nestled in the highlands of San Martin Cuchumatanes there is a group of courageous women who challenge the status quo of their community and global coffee production. These women have created a collective to bring themselves more financial stability, increased market access, and to uplift their community. These mothers, wives and daughters are known as “Mujeres luchando por un mejor futuro,” or “Women fighting for a better future.” Ella is inspiring other communities across the globe to follow in their footsteps and create their own paths.

We selected this coffee to highlight the amazing work being done by the women of Ella. This coffee is very sweet with a subtle nuttiness and lingering notes of apple and cherry.

Kunjin • Papua New Guinea

TASTING NOTES:

Chocolate Malt, Candied Almond, Clove

REGION: Wahgi Valley, Western Highlands
COUNTRY: Papua New Guinea
PRODUCERS: Smallholders
ALTITUDE: 1400-1800 masl
VARIETIES: Arusha, Typica, Bourbon
PROCESSING: Washed/24hr Ferment
DRYING: Patio/Tarpaulin

Sometimes you find something that just makes sense, and everything is right with the world. Since 2013, Kunjin has been that something for us. As our longest continuous buying relationship, it is hard to express how much this coffee means to our lineup and our community. The level of consistency and quality these farmers provide has resulted in Kunjin being one of our only staple year-round single origin offerings.

Mills in the Wahgi Valley region purchase cherries from smallholder farmers, who each have approximately 1.5 hectares of land with around 2,500 trees per hectare. To create the delicious flavors you taste in each cup of Kunjin, cherries are sorted, depulped, dry fermented for 24 hours, washed, and dried on tarpaulins for three to six days. We would like to extend a huge thanks to our community for their incredible support and love of this coffee, allowing us to increase our purchasing volume year over year.

This is our seventh year purchasing coffee from Mensur Abahika via our dear friends at Osito Coffee. Mensur’s coffee has become a cornerstone of our yearly Ethiopian offerings, and his coffee is a phenomenal representation of the Ethiopian flavor profiles we all know and love.

Mensur is a member and unofficial leader of a group called Tokuma Coffee Farmers, a collective of single producers in the Agaro area of the Jimma zone. Tokuma Coffee Farmers work together on marketing, exporting, and sharing coffee knowledge, allowing them to improve their overall cup quality and more effectively market their coffee to prospective buyers. These factors, coupled with the help of Addis Exporter and Osito Coffee, have helped producers like Mensur achieve market access to specialty coffee roasters across the world.

Groups like Tokuma Coffee Farmers provide a unique opportunity for all parties in the specialty supply chain: highly traceable, single producer lots from Ethiopia in which the producers have full control over their coffee. Given Ethiopian coffee production is primarily dominated by large cooperatives and processing stations, we are grateful for the opportunity to purchase and share these distinctive coffees from individual members of Tokuma Coffee Farmers with you.

Mensur, and other members of Tokuma Coffee Farmers, feel a deep sense of pride in maintaining control over their operations and receiving the recognition and rewards they deserve for their hard work. Over the years of Osito Coffee and Addis Exporters working directly with these farmers, they have seen dramatic improvements in their lives with the profits from their labor. Many have been able to expand their farms, plant more trees, and improve agricultural practices through techniques like pruning and stumping. Beyond coffee, they’ve diversified their businesses, offering employment to local community members and improving the livelihoods of their families. Following this vein, Mensur has also been producing washed coffees in addition to naturals for three annual harvests now. His ability to diversify his offerings is largely due to the success he has seen from working with the Tokuma Coffee Farmers.

As always, we have selected Mensur’s coffee for our lineup to continue our purchasing relationship with him. He is leading the way to improve quality and market access for many producers in Agaro, and we are proud to play a small role in his work by carrying his coffees year over year. This coffee is bright, clean and complex with notes of citrus and green tea.
