Summary
The Kitchen Manager at Commonplace Coffee plays a critical leadership role, ensuring the efficient and safe operation of the Commonplace Coffee Bakery. This position is responsible for maintaining a high standard of quality in pastry and food production, which supplies Commonplace Coffee retail locations and wholesale partners. Success in this role requires strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, along with comprehensive knowledge of bakery operations. The Kitchen Manager will serve as a primary point of contact for various shifts, addressing staffing needs, resolving interpersonal matters, and monitoring team requirements. This is accomplished by being human-focused, organized, communicative, and knowledgeable about all functions of the bakery. This holistic awareness allows the Kitchen Manager to be effective during their shifts and understand their impact on other shifts - leading to full team success.
** In addition to the qualifications below, we are hoping to find someone with experience baking bread. Though not required, this person could be trained on our current bread products and own/develop a bread program that meets the needs of the bakery's current client base.
Essential Functions
- Inventory Management: Oversee the entire product inventory process to ensure adequate supply levels for all production needs. Responsibilities include receiving deliveries, proper stock storage, inventory control using technology, and reporting supply chain disruptions.
- Menu Development: Collaborate with the Bakery Manager and leadership team on seasonal menu planning, including research and development, ingredient list updates, and staff communication regarding menu changes.
- Kitchen Workflow and Cleanliness: Lead the team to complete all tasks efficiently and within ServSafe standards of health and safety.
- Wholesale Coordination: Assist the Bakery Manager with the management of wholesale orders and client requests.
- Shift Leadership: Act as a shift leader for a regularly assigned shift, providing guidance and support to the team, coordinating staffing needs, and possessing comprehensive knowledge of all product recipes and preparation procedures.
- Scheduling and Staffing: Coordinate staff availability, address scheduling issues, and contribute to the hiring and performance review processes.
- Quality Control: Monitor inventory usage and communicate needs for food products, packaging, labels, and equipment. Maintain a balance between internal orders and wholesale orders.
- Communication: Prepare and distribute necessary communications, such as weekly order forms and updates to managers and clients.
- Sanitation and Organization: Ensure compliance with ServSafe standards, maintain cleanliness and organization within the bakery, and follow First-In-First-Out inventory procedures.
Qualifications
- Prior baking or cooking experience is required.
- Demonstrated desire for professional growth and increased responsibility.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Proficiency in using digital tools and technology for operations management and communication.
- Demonstrated integrity and reliability.
- Proven ability to solve complex problems.
- Bread baking experience is preferred.
- ServSafe Certification is required by completion of training.
Physical Demands
- Ability to stand, walk, lift, and carry for 4-8 hour shifts.
- Ability to sit and drive for extended periods.
- Ability to perform repetitive tasks with hands, wrists, and forearms.
- Ability to detect and perceive smells related to coffee and bakery products.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with team members.
- Ability to lift up to 5 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
Work environment
- Work is performed at the bakery, coffee shops, and during travel.
- The work environment may be noisy.
- This position involves significant customer/client/staff interaction.

- This role reports to the Bakery Manager.
