RETAIL OPERATIONS MANAGER

Summary
The Retail Operations Manager at Commonplace Coffee is responsible for the success of all Commonplace retail shops. By overseeing hiring, training, standards, shop operations, and the development of shop leaders, the Retail Operations Manager ensures that cafe staff are supported, guests receive exceptional hospitality, and coffee is prepared in a way that is consistent with Commonplace Coffee’s established standards for quality.

 

Essential Functions

  • Build committed, passionate, and high-performing retail teams by coaching, inspiring, and developing members to success.
  • Develop and empower a strong team of Shop Managers, Lead Baristas, and Baristas, whose work exemplifies hospitality and a commitment to the craft of coffee.
  • Maintain a consistent touch-point with retail shops by stepping in to work a minimum of 2-4 bar shifts monthly, support on-site and off-site community events, etc.
  • Serve as the initial point of contact for retail shop candidates.
  • Oversee new retail employee onboarding and training in collaboration with Shop Managers.
  • Oversee implementation of new operational procedures and training plans in collaboration with the Commonplace Leadership team.
  • Ensure all staff at every retail shop demonstrates hospitality toward our guests and finds new and creative ways to connect more deeply with the surrounding communities.
  • Set, maintain, and update training and cafe standards in collaboration with the Leadership Team.
  • Develop, coordinate, and implement seasonal beverages releases and retail improvements, such as new menu items or product lines, in pursuit of growth and quality.
  • Drive exceptional financial performance for each shop through strong operational management, coordination with marketing efforts, and coaching shop leaders to help each location succeed.
  • Manage vendor relationships for retail stores.
  • Maintain facilities management contact list to support retail shop facility needs.
  • Advise on the design and execution of new retail locations and opening new locations efficiently.
  • Create regular opportunities to discuss retail and cross functional best practices. 
  • Create partnerships with team members involved with roasting, fulfillment, equipment service, bakery, marketing, education, and operations.
  • Participate in weekly Commonplace Leadership team meetings to discuss organizational goals and strategies as well as quarterly planning meetings
  • Run monthly cafe manager group meetings and monthly individual manager check-ins.
  • Manage Square updates as well as in-store point-of-sale and other critical in-store hardware and operating systems.

Qualifications

  • Prior experience in coffee or food & beverage.
  • Strong verbal and written communication.
  • Experience using Gmail, Google Workspace, and similar shift management and HR software.
  • Experience using Square (or similar POS systems) and Deputy (or similar scheduling/payroll software).
  • 2+ years in retail management setting, with specific experience managing other retail leaders.
  • 1+ years managing the financial success of multiple retail locations.
  • A love and respect of coffee, food, and memorable guest experiences.
  • A desire to be challenged by ambitious and difficult goals.
  • The ability to balance both the big picture and the nitty-gritty details by shaping the strategy for retail shops while also driving excellent day-to-day operations.
  • The ability to effectively articulate written and verbal communications to people at all levels of the company with clarity, confidence, and grace (and appropriate amounts of humor).
  • The ability to collaborate and learn from others.

Physical Demands

  • Stand and walk – must be able to stand for 4-8hour shifts and move about the space.
  • Perform repetitive tasks – must be able to complete repetitive motions with the hands, wrists and forearms to operate espresso machinery.
  • Taste and smell – must be able to detect and perceive the smells of coffee.
  • Oral communication – must be able to clearly and effectively communicate with customers and team members.
  • Carry weight, lift – must be able to lift up to 5 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally.

Work Environment

  • Work is performed in coffee shops and in coffee production environments. 
  • The work environment can be noisy.
  • This job involves high amounts of interpersonal interaction.
  • This job involves high amounts of travel between six (6) Pittsburgh-based Commonplace Coffee locations, as well as an expectation to travel to Indiana, PA-based Commonplace Coffee locations a minimum of one time per month.
