Founded in 2004, the Nano Challa Cooperative is based out of Ethiopia’s Gera Forest. Their group is part of Kata Muduga, one of the best-known coffee Farmer’s Cooperative Unions in the world. Technoserve is a nonprofit connecting low income communities to skills and industry connections. They helped Nano Challa to become one of the first cooperatives in their region to install washing stations in 2009, allowing them to produce washed process coffee. From TechnoServe, they learned farming practices, wet mill operation, and business skills. In their first year of producing washed coffee, Nano Challa not only paid off their loan, but also turned a profit. Since then, Nano Challa and other cooperatives in the Kata Muduga Union have been growing in numbers, increasing in coffee quality, and earning livable profits from their coffee.
We selected this coffee because we are excited to continue supporting the Kata Muduga cooperative. We love this coffee’s clarity in the cup and its juicy mouthfeel.
