Since he moved to Pittsburgh, Jim Pollock has been an incredible friend, collaborator, and supporter of Commonplace Coffee. By donating his time and artwork, Jim Pollock has supported us and our community in far-reaching ways. Of the partnership, Jim says, “After we moved, Commonplace was the first spot in Pittsburgh where I became a regular, so being able to collaborate with you is amazing. I always joke about doing art for my favorite restaurants or coffee shops, but my schedule never lines up. I guess that was the one good thing about the pandemic.” In addition to designing the Pollock Blend label, which incorporates the Walking Mug motif from past merch collaborations, Jim also tasted a selection of coffees at Commonplace Coffee Headquarters. After trying multiple options, we decided to lay the foundation of the blend with a honey processed coffee from Yony Cisneros in El Salvador. Yony’s coffee defines this blend, with a full mouthfeel and nuanced fruitiness. From there, the Guatemalan coffee, El Zorro, brings lovely hazelnut and honey notes, adding to the blend’s approachability. Mensur Abahika’s coffee rounds out the cup with a fruitiness that we love from natural processed Ethiopian coffees. $4 from each bag of Pollock Blend benefits Divided Sky Foundation, a nonprofit founded by Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio, which delivers quality care and compassionate treatment to those affected by alcoholism and addiction.

We’re incredibly excited to bring back Winter: Solstice Series for its third year in our lineup! Just like a well-loved winter tradition, such as sledding or visiting the holiday market, creating and sharing this coffee with you has become a special part of our year.

When creating these limited-time blends, we want seasonality to shine. This year’s blend components will look similar to last year’s, reflecting our desire to create long-term purchasing relationships with producers.

The Mexican component, a lot from the Teojomulco farmers, is one of those returning coffees. This Pluma Hidalgo variety offers a nuanced, smooth body layered with dried fruit and brown sugar notes, reminiscent of holiday fruit cake. To build on that base sweetness while maintaining the underlying fruit flavors, we chose two Ethiopian offerings. Mensur Abahika’s natural-processed coffee and Gomoro’s washed-processed coffee create a fuller body and showcase what detail-oriented processing can add.
