PITTSBURGH, PA (September 30, 2024) – Commonplace Coffee is officially launching an innovative, new single-use cup from San Francisco and Berlin-based technology company GaeaStar at three of their five Pittsburgh-based cafe locations today – Monday, September 30. Commonplace Coffee is an initial pilot phase partner and the first company in the Northeast United States to launch this product. GaeaStar cups focus on four main benefits: User experience, circular consumption, local production, and geo-neutral impact.
The cup, priced at just $3, is currently available for individual purchase or as an add-on to a drink order at their Garfield (5467 Penn Ave), Mexican War Streets (1501 Buena Vista St), and Rockwell Park (7514 Thomas Blvd, Ste 100) cafes. Commonplace Coffee currently offers a $0.25 discount when guests bring in their own reusable cup, a promotion they have offered for years. With the new GaeaStar cup, it will pay for itself in as little as twelve (12) visits when brought back into the shop.
In addition to trying this new cup, guests who visit these cafes through the month of October can purchase a limited time “Pink Dragon” beverage served exclusively in the GaeaStar cup. This drink features pink dragonfruit, cherry, and a pinch of salt, available hot or iced in a latte or matcha latte. The drink is priced at $8, which includes the cost of the cup.
GaeaStar first launched their single use clay cups in Berlin, but the concept was initially inspired by CEO and Founder Sanjeev Mankotia’s time in India. He noted how street vendors serve tea out of handmade terracotta cups. GaeaStar’s mission is to replace single-use plastic with their earthenware vessels, which are made of just clay, salt and water via a proprietary ultra-fast additive manufacturing (3D printing) process. They have created a whole new category of to-go vessels - multi-use, low-cost clay cups. Their cups can be single-use or reusable, depending on the user's needs. After they are discarded or broken, they leave no environmental impact. It’s earth going back to earth.
Head of Customer Experience, Product, and Marketing at GaeaStar Georgie Alcock shares, “GaeaStar is thrilled to introduce our Clay Cups to Pittsburgh with our exclusive launch partner Commonplace Coffee. We're thrilled to partner with a local institution that shares our commitment to sustainability, innovation and providing only the best customer experiences. Together we are crafting a new, plastic-free, sustainable future for to-go coffee, without sacrificing function or design. We're excited to embark on this journey, and can't wait to see the positive ripple effect our partnership will have on the Pittsburgh community."
