This is our third year offering coffee from producers Ashok and Divya Patre of Ratnagiri Estate in India. The Patre family has stewarded their land for nearly a century, producing specialty coffee and fine pepper. The Patres apply a precise attention to detail and have a strong focus on coffee innovation.
Over the course of the last half decade, Indian specialty coffee has become exponentially more popular for roasters in the western hemisphere, in a large part due to a greater focus from coffee importers and exporters on bringing India’s coffees to US and European markets. For Commonplace Coffee, this relationship building in India is largely spearheaded by our long time importing partner Osito, and their collaboration with farmers throughout Karnataka in the southwest part of the country.
Coffee Leaf Rust (CLR) is a disease that affects coffee production worldwide, leading to large portions of farms’ yields being wiped out. Luckily for coffee producers (and for you, reader!), there are a myriad of efforts that can decrease the likelihood of CLR interfering with production: these include varietal resistances and farmers’ varietal selections based on region, shade cover, tree pruning, and fungicides. Currently, there are over 50 known races of coffee leaf rust - India is affected by the majority of these races (which is not the case for most producing countries).
In countries where producers’ variety selections are highly limited due to rampant coffee diseases, things might seem bleak. Thankfully, there are companies/organizations that work to create new varietals, many with the goal of finding more resilient, higher yielding, and higher quality varieties. One such company is Central Coffee Research Institute (CCRI), who is responsible for making a series of coffee varieties (called ‘Selections’) that are incredibly common throughout India for their incredibly high resistance to CLR. Selection 9 in particular is the prized jewel of Karnataka, with its strong resistances, excellent drought resistance and good cup quality. This is the variety that Commonplace has purchased the most of from our relationships in India.
Though we’ve just shared a lot of information about India’s borderline necessity for special varieties that combat the country’s oftentimes challenging growing environment, this particular lot is a unique exception! This offering is a washed Catuaí, which is wildly susceptible to CLR, Coffee Berry Disease, and nematodes (a microscopic roundworm that can lead to plant death). With all of this in mind, why would Ashok and Divya choose to grow such a risky varietal in India? Put simply, this coffee is a clear and impressive demonstration or their immense expertise in coffee cultivation, production and farm management!
We selected this coffee to continue highlighting Ashok and Divya Patre’s outstanding work at Ratnagiri Estate. This coffee has a clean and comfortable profile that’s incredibly sweet, with unique nutty qualities and fresh fruit notes carrying through to the finish.
FAQs
Shipping Information
We operate Monday-Friday and strive to ship your order within 2 business days of the order or renewal date (not including weekends.) Your order will be shipped by UPS or USPS to your door. You will receive a tracking notification when your order ships.
Roasting Information
All coffee is roasted fresh to order on our Loring S35 Kestrel Coffee Roaster. All bags are stamped with the roast date, and we think coffee tastes best if consumed within 2-4 weeks. However, if left whole bean and stored in a cool, dry place away from sunlight, the coffee can remain enjoyable for up to 4-6 months, depending on the bag or container. Most of our coffee is roasted to a medium or light/medium roast level, except for All Day, which is our staple dark roast offering.
