Importer Sundog Trading and exporter Baho Coffee work together to source and produce phenomenal Rwandan coffee. They demonstrate a care and commitment to producers that is seldom seen in the coffee industry. This coffee was produced by the Ikizere Women Group. Ikizere means “confidence” in Kinyarwanda. Ikizere is Baho Coffee’s flagship initiative to create more traceable lot separations in Rwanda. Ikizere members are widowed women and single mothers, who navigate two traditionally patriarchal systems: Rwandese society and the coffee production industry. Over three years, Ikizere has expanded from 20 to 100 women. Baho Coffee supports them by covering their health insurance, providing short term loans for family development, creating access to clean drinking water, and more.
This particular lot was produced by 5 women:
Jeannette Mukashyaka
Beata Nyiranzabandora
Virginie Murekatete
Lea Kamugenzi
Suzane Kampundu
We selected this coffee to support the Ikizere Initiative, Sundog Trading, Baho Coffee. This coffee is a stunning representation of Rwandan washed coffee. It is tartly acidic, clean, very sweet, and perfect for fall.
Baho Coffee Founder Emmanuel Rusatira shared these beautiful words with us:
Ikizere Women is composed of women of the same identity: single mothers and heads of families. The reasons to be single mothers are different but all people in this category face many social and economic challenges due to traditional perceptions. We decided to bring these women together, through coffee, and revive their hope by showing them that we consider them as part of the community and they are equally needed, important, and valued like any other person – regardless of their struggle, social, and economic situations.
Recognition was one step, but we also want to advocate for them and sell their coffee to buyers who care about people, humanity, and equality. These women used their hands to pulp coffee cherries instead of using machines. With the income from this coffee, Baho promised these women to receive the highest price in the country, and through support from our buyers.
The relationship between Ikizere Women and Baho Coffee is based on humanity, social development, and trying to change and improve the lifestyle of this group. We have trained them about coffee growing, agricultural practices, agronomy, and coffee quality handling. The group has a high level of understanding, commitment, and determination. We make sure they are the happiest farmers not because they are women, not because they are single mothers responsible for families, but mainly because of their high commitment to deliver quality coffee to our washing station. We will continue to advocate and support these women to significantly change their lives.
FAQs
Shipping Information
We operate Monday-Friday and strive to ship your order within 2 business days of the order or renewal date (not including weekends.) Your order will be shipped by UPS or USPS to your door. You will receive a tracking notification when your order ships.
Roasting Information
All coffee is roasted fresh to order on our Loring S35 Kestrel Coffee Roaster. All bags are stamped with the roast date, and we think coffee tastes best if consumed within 2-4 weeks. However, if left whole bean and stored in a cool, dry place away from sunlight, the coffee can remain enjoyable for up to 4-6 months, depending on the bag or container. Most of our coffee is roasted to a medium or light/medium roast level, except for All Day, which is our staple dark roast offering.
